Abstract

After the Dayton Peace Accord in 1995, ‘Bošnjaci(Bosniaks: Bosnian Muslims)’ have been as a ‘South Slavic Nation’ living in the Republic of Bosnia & Herzegovina and their language is ‘bosanski jezik(Bosnian Language)’. However, the definitions related to ‘Bošnjaci’ and ‘bosanski jezik’ are still a matter of controversy. It is very difficult to define ‘nation’ in one word. Ethnicity is often defined in terms of both subjective and objective criteria. In Korean, ‘ethnicity’ can be interpreted as ‘ethnic group’ or ‘nation’ depending on the context. In human history, it was natural for a nation to be artificially created, newly re-created, and changed according to circumstances and conditions. From a certain point of view, it is said that a nation exists in a specific time and condition, and is a group that can be newly created and changed at any time according to the changes in surrounding circumstances. At the time of the birth of a new nation, it is necessary to bind the members together and to give them a sense of national consciousness. At this time, language is the most effective means of showing identity among the same people and dissimilarity to other people, which makes language easier to connect with nationalism. This study analyzed the influence and the function of the language in the formation process of ethnic and nation state through the case of ‘Bošnaci’ in the Balkan region of the 20th century
