Abstract
This study aimed to examine scientific values and attitudes embodied in the 2022 revised elementary science textbooks. These values and attitudes are grouped into three categories, namely, scientific values, scientific attitudes, and participation and practice, and eight subareas, including the aesthetics of science. The study conducted a quantitative analysis by comparing between the 2015 revised elementary science textbooks and six 4th-grade science textbooks based on the 2022 revised curriculum. The study focused on the location of occurrence, implementation method, and consistency with evaluations of these values and attitudes. Based on the criteria for qualitative analysis, this study analyzed the 2015 revised elementary science textbooks. The findings revealed that the overall frequency of elements of values and attitudes increased by approximately 1.5 times in the 2022 revised textbooks compared with those based on the 2015 curriculum. In particular, implementation through supplementary materials (e.g., speech bubbles and informational boxes) and assessment items significantly expanded. Furthermore, in terms of elements, contribution to a safe and sustainable society, ethics of scientific activities, and openness in scientific problem-solving were strengthened, whereas scientific utility and aesthetics were relatively weakened. Congruence between learning content and assessment of values and attitudes increased from 19.4% (2015 revision) to 51.2% (2022 revision), which indicates an increase in the proportion of values and attitudes presented in connection with achievement standards and assessments. The results reveal the extent to which the elements of values and attitudes are implemented in textbooks based on the 2022 revised curriculum, thus providing implications for the future development of science textbooks and the design of value-centered science education. In particular, the study recommends that greater emphasis should be placed on the integrated implementation of emotional and critical thinking elements and their association with assessment to promote education that fosters scientific literacy and sustainable living.
