Abstract
This study examined the structural relationships between children’s flourishing, as defined by the EPOCH model (Kern et al., 2016), and multidimensional life satisfaction. It further investigated how these relationships vary by gender. To address the growing concerns about the emotional and psychological well-being of children and adolescents in contemporary society, flourishing has been increasingly emphasized as a psychological resource that supports positive development and life satisfaction. Accordingly, this study used the EPOCH model, which is appropriate for developmental characteristics of childhood, to empirically assess the effects of flourishing components on satisfaction across multiple life domains. Participants were 1,297 elementary school students in Grades 3–6 (644 boys and 653 girls) from across the country who completed an online survey. Structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis were performed. The results revealed that flourishing components were differentially associated with specific domains of life satisfaction in the total sample. Specifically, engagement significantly predicted school satisfaction; connectedness predicted friend, self, and family satisfaction; optimism predicted self-satisfaction; and happiness predicted family, school, and environmental satisfaction. Multi-group analysis further demonstrated that, among girls, engagement significantly predicted school satisfaction, and connectedness significantly predicted self- and family satisfaction. These findings indicate that children’s flourishing may function as a set of psychological resources that shape and support multiple life satisfaction domains, highlighting the importance of a multidimensional approach to understanding child well-being. In addition, the results imply that relationships between flourishing and life satisfaction may differ by gender, underscoring the need to consider gender-sensitive approaches in investigating child well-being and designing positive psychology-based interventions in school settings
