조병화 시에 나타난 유학적 상상력 연구

이 연구는 조병화 시에 나타난 유학사상의 핵심인 ‘仁’에 관한 시적 표현 특성을 고찰한 것이다. 조병화 시에 가장 많이 등장하는 시어는 ‘어머니’이다. 그런 만큼 그에게 어머니는 시심의 원천이다. 그의 어머니에 대한 절실한 마음은 두 가지 의미로 풀이된다. 첫째, 개인적 차원에서는 자신을 낳아준 근원이라는 혈육 인식의 결과인 효심의 발로이다. 둘째, 포괄적으로 보면 그것은 현대인들이 물질문명에 압도되어 점점 사랑이 고갈됨으로써 멸망의 위기에 직면하고 있음을 깊이 성찰한 결과, 그 구원의 길로서 인류가 모성 같은 ‘인’, 즉 박애정신을 회복하는 일이 절대로 필요하다는 인식의 시적 표현이라 할 수 있다. 유학사상에 따르면 ‘인’은 인간의 천부적인 본성이다. 조병화는 이러한 인을 통해 비극적 세계의 구원 가능성을 확신하였다. 그래서 그는 돈에 가려져서 사랑이 고갈되는 현대사회를 뼈저리게 성찰하면서도 결코 사랑의 빛은 꺼지지 않으리라는 낙관적 전망을 가졌다. 다만 혼탁한 사회에서 사람들이 제 본성을 자각하고 그것이 사회로 구현되는 수행 과정이 요구되는데, 그의 시는 바로 그 계기를 촉발하는 의미를 갖는다. 즉 그는 시를 통한 대중적 감화의 방법으로 ‘인’의 사회적 실천을 도모하고 인류가 함께 자유라는 목적지에 이르는 길을 열고자 했다. 따라서 조병화의 시 쓰기는 자기동일성을 실현하기 위해 애쓴 예술적 행위이면서 그 사회적 확장을 꿈꾸는 철학적 성찰이요, 종교적 이념으로도 승화될 수 있다고 하겠다.
Abstract
This research aimed at investigating poetic characteristic of Jo, Byunghwa’s poem through ‘benevolence(仁, love)’, the core of Confucian ideas, by targeting his poem, The point of research result is as follows. The poetic word which most frequently appeared in Jo, Byunghwa’s poem was ‘mother’. For him, mother was the source of his poetic turn of mind. His earnest mind about mother could be interpreted in two ways. Personal meaning is the expression of filial love by deeply recognizing the point that she is the source which gave birth to him. Another is, the poetic expression of introspection that love is facing the crisis of fall by being exhausted since the modern people are overwhelmed by material civilization, and the recognition that the recovery of ‘benevolence’ just as motherhood, is definitely necessary as a way of salvation. He was convinced of the possibility of tragic human salvation, since the consciousness of love is an innate human nature, which cannot become extinct. Therefore, while bitterly introspecting the modern society where the love is exhausted by being covered with money, he had the optimistic prospect that the light of love will be never extinguished. However, people are required to have the process of execution that people become aware of their nature in corrupt world and realize that in the society, his poem has the significance to touch off the opportunity. That is, he intended to promote social practice of ‘benevolence’ and open a way to freedom together with human race with the method of the influence of the public through the poem. In conclusion, Jo, Byunghwa’s poem writing could be sublimated to the artistic deed which endeavored to realize self-identity, also, philosophical introspection dreaming of its social expansion, as well as religious idea.
