Abstract
This study conducts a critical analysis of conceptual definitions and related methods for presenting solid figures in sixth-grade mathematics textbooks. By focusing on the format of definitions, presentation methods for each type of solid figure, perceptual diversity, and differences across textbooks, the study examines the educational validity of these components and derived the following implications. First, while example-based definitions support intuitive understanding, combining them with analytical definitions requires a meticulous coordination between the scope of a definition and its visual representation. Second, the presentation of solid figure concepts typically includes a combination of definitions and properties, including constructive definitions, thus highlighting the need for logical consistency and structural coherence. Third, in terms of perceptual diversity, the limited orientation of figures in the majority of textbooks restricts the development of spatial sense and generalization skills. Fourth, comparative analysis reveals that differences in definitional approaches and visual representations across textbooks may influence the conceptual formation of students. Based on these findings, the study puts forward four educational recommendations, namely, a clear distinction between definitions and properties, strategic use of visual representation, consistency and coherence in textbook development, and support for teacher competency and instructional materials. In particular, conceptual definitions of solid figures should extend beyond terminology delivery and be structured in a manner that aligns with students’ cognitive development by balancing visual elements with conceptual precision. Given that teachers play the role of mediators who interpret and reconstruct textbook content, elucidating the interaction between textbook structure and instructional strategy is essential. This study provides foundational insights for improving the presentation of solid figure concepts in future textbook development and instructional design.
