한영 및 영한 번역 도구로서 ChatGPT의 정확성 및 특성에 대한 서술적 문헌 연구
A Narrative Review of ChatGPT’s Accuracy and Characteristics as a Korean-English and English-Korean Translator

생성형 인공지능 ChatGPT는 인공지능 시대에 있어 우리 사회 거의 모든 분야에 막대한 영향력을끼치고 있으며, 영어 교육 분야도 예외가 아니다. 다양한 영어 교육 분야에서 ChatGPT는 이미 많이활용되고 있으며 앞으로 그 영향력은 더욱 커질 것으로 예상된다. 본 연구에서는 서술적 문헌 연구(narrative review)를 통해 ChatGPT의 한영 및 영한 번역 도구로서의 특성과 장단점을 파악하고자한다. 2023년 1월부터 2025년 6월까지 한국학술지인용색인(KCI)에 등재된 논문 중 ChatGPT의 영한 및 한영 번역의 정확성을 실험 연구한 18편의 논문을 대상으로 하여 한영 및 영한 번역 도구로서의 연구 동향과 분석 결과에 나타난 장단점을 분석하였다. 연구 동향에 있어 한영 번역이 영한 번역보다 훨씬 더 많았으며, 번역 텍스트의 종류에는 문학작품의 비중이 기존 기계번역 관련 연구보다 더 높게 나타났다. 또한 ChatGPT는 기존 기계번역기인 네이버 파파고(Naver Papago), 구글번역기(Google Translate)보다는 주로 인간 번역가가 정확성의 비교 대상이었다. ChatGPT 번역의 장점은다시쓰기의 적절성, 번역의 자연성, 창의성으로 분류할 수 있었다. 특히 프롬프트를 활용하여 번역 대상 문장뿐만 아니라 전체적인 맥락을 제공하여 번역의 정확성을 더욱 높일 수 있었다. 반면에ChatGPT 번역의 단점은 기존 기계번역기에서도 볼 수 있었던 동음이의어의 오류, 원문의 생략 오류, 음역에 의한 오류 등이었다. 전체적으로 ChatGPT는 기존 기계번역기의 정확성을 완전히 능가하였으며, 일부 번역 텍스트에 있어서는 인간 전문가의 수준과 거의 동일한 것으로 판단된다. 2022년 11월처음 공개된 이후 2025년 10월 현재에 이르기까지의 발전 속도를 감안하면, ChatGPT의 번역 도구로서의 정확성은 더욱 높아질 것이며 앞으로 영어 교육의 전체 목표에도 큰 영향을 끼칠 것이다.
Abstract
ChatGPT now has a huge influence on almost every aspect of society, and English education is no exception. ChatGPT has already been widely used in various capacities for English education. This study explored the research trends and accuracy of ChatGPT as a tool both in Korean–English and English–Korean translations. From the papers published in the Korea Citation Index from January 2023 to June 2025, 18 papers were selected for the review study. The results revealed that Korean–English translations were more researched than English–Korean translations. The proportion of literary works was higher than that of previous studies related to machine translation. Finally, ChatGPT was more used by human translators than existing machine translators (i.e., Naver Papago, Google Translate). The advantages of ChatGPT’s translation were classified into rewriting accuracy, naturalness, and creativity of translation. The disadvantages of ChatGPT’s translation were errors due to homonyms, omission errors in translating the original text, and errors due to transliteration. Overall, ChatGPT exceeded the accuracy of existing machine translators. For some texts, it was even judged to be close to the level of human experts. Considering the speed of the development of AI, ChatGPT’s accuracy as a translation tool will likely become even greater in the near future.
