초록

Reflexive verbs are morphologically different in Russian and Polish: in Russian the reflexive morpheme -sja is fused morphologically with the verbs itself, whereas in Polish it is a separate syntactic element, a free-standing pronoun się, which can appear in various places in a sentence. Nevertheless, the functions of reflexive verbs in Russian and Polish are strikingly similar. This article surveys the ways in which these functions are served by the two morphological types of verbs. A unified analysis is proposed under which similar functions can be achieved in both languages if the presence of the reflexive morpheme in Russian is due not to additive morphology, but if it is instead the result of a subcategorization requirement specified in the lexicon on a non-reflexive base verb. It is shown that this can unite the “circumfixal” formations in both languages, combinations of a verbal prefix plus the reflexive morpheme with distinctive meaning associated only with this combination.
