자음체계를 포함한 음운체계에 대한 유형적 보편성은 대체로 UPSID(UCLA Phonological Segment Inventory Database)와 같은 대용량 데이터베이스를 통해서 밝혀졌다.

Abstract

It is obvious that languages differ in their phonology and thus phonological systems also differ from one language to another. However. phonological systems of natural human languages are not unorganized sets of simple assemblings of speech sounds but are structured with some principles concerning articulatory perceptual and cognitive levels. In concrete. there must be certain principles that control what types of sounds languages take in their systems from the several hundred sounds. Phoneticians and phonologists claim that phonological systems are trade-offs between the ‘ease of articulation’ on the one hand and ‘perceptual salience’ on the other hand. With these constraints, languages arrange their speech sounds according to phonation types such as obstruents and sonorants for the hearers as well as the speakers. and share some common sounds which we believe to be typological phonetic and phonological universals. “Size principle” is another compositional factor for sounds in a system. and indicates the difference in the relation between the size of a language’s consonant inventory and the kinds of consonants expected to be in it. In this paper we apply these principles to the four consecutive proto-slavic consonant systems including Proto-Indo-European system. and discuss the findings under the typological universals. We will see that the consonant systems of Proto-Indo-European and early Proto-Slavic are different from the other two systems in their nature of consonantism.
