Abstract
From the 3rd century, Croatian people had started to move to Balkans and settled down in the current area through mass migration in the 7th century. The area Croatian people migrated was the Balkan Illyricum of ancient Roman and the indigenous people of this area had lived as a single Illyrian despite their diverse ethnic origins. Due to the various social and political reasons, Illyrian identity in Balkans changed to new Slavic identity after the 7th century, and shifted to Croatian identity since the 9th century. It is not enough to explain the identity-shift taken place in Croatian area with simple population or cultural changes caused by the mass migration. The racial and regional identity issues occurred with the blend of the natives of Balkans and Slavs can be clarified through analyzing the various surrounding environments. In this study, based on this background, the circumstances and the identity formation process of the Balkan Illyricum of the middle ages when the mass migration of Slavs started were analyzed through comparing various hypotheses. The appearance of the Croatian identity in the 9th century was the final result of the gradual identity-shift taken place in the Balkan Illyricum area after the fall of the Roman Empire. But even after the establishment of the Croatian identity, Illyricum and Illyrian identity had been reborn for a long time as the key ideology of the nationalist movement changing its name to South Slavism and Yogoslavism. And until now, the Illyrian identity still remains in the heart of modern Croatian as the adoration for the western culture.
