Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the aspects of philosophical writings of college students by analyzing the reviews that college students at Kangwon National University who was taking a general education elective course “writing and speaking” wrote on Chuang Tzu's book, Jemullon as an assignment. Although this course is offered for every student at that university regardless of academic year, freshmen mainly took the initiative in this course, and the subjects in this study were consequently the freshmen at the university. Students are mostly familiar with the name of a scholar Chuang Tzu yet just rely on researchers to acquire fragmentary knowledge about classic. When the students at the university read and reviewed the scholar's book in person, they underwent changes in their philosophical perspective such as accepting, understanding, backlash or rejecting. The way the students responded to the book was extremely contrary. Some were definitely receptive to the scholar's thinking system, and others were obviously rejective. The former had a tendency to understand his thought, and the latter wrote that although they understood his thought, they didn't think it's reasonable to consider well-established views wrong. This researcher gave them advice mostly about the shift of their perspective and consequent responses rather than about basic grammatical problems such as typo, spacing or incorrect sentence. In this study, the philosophical writings of the students who entered Kangwon National University in 2014 on the book Jemullon were analyzed, and this study is expected to provide useful information on the perspective shifts of the new college students and their awareness.
