Abstract
This study focuses on the transformation of the speakers in the literati’s works during the Song Dynasty Renzong period(1022~1063), a phenomenon insufficiently explained in the formation and development process of the literary corpus, and pays attention to gender representation and its literary implications. Beginning with an examination of female speakers in the Huajian-ci tradition the study then analyses representative works by Yan Shu and Ouyang Xiu, identifying diverse speaker types appearing in their lyrics, including the “unspecified male speaker,” the “gender-ambiguous speaker,” and the “self-referential male speaker” who directly reflects the author himself. Through this analysis, the paper demonstrates that ci poetry during the Renzong era did not merely follow the traditions of Huajian-ci, but developed its own distinctive literary modes through the complex construction and transformation of speaker identity. In particular, the speakers in Yan Shu’s and Ouyang Xiu’s ci are shown to transcend conventional literary devices, effectively articulating core emotions and thematic messages through varied expressions of gender identity and speaker types.
