Abstract

There is a frequent description related to food in Moon Soon-tae’s novel The Boy Born in 1941. However, academic research on this subject isn’t systematic. This paper focuses on the food depicted in the novel, arguing that in the historical context of the Korean War, food not only reveals the author’s deep reflection on human existence and relationships, but also serves as a key medium for considering the issue of the division of the Korean Peninsula. The scarcity of food stimulates humans’ most fundamental desire for survival under the extreme circumstances of war, during which no other values are of greater importance than the survival instinct. Even though the protagonist values the life of a pig and holds a critical attitude toward the atrocities committed by the anti-communism suppression unit, he is still tempted by the scent of roasted pork, leading him to submit to survival instinct. In order to eat lard, the protagonist’s grandmother discards her dignity as matriarch and begs for food from her once-disdained husband’s concubine, “Nancho” while taking refuge in a cave. A character named “Sudol” violates his principle of “acquiring food by moral means” and steals chicken from others, showing no sense of shame. Through such figures, the author reveals the impact and torment that war inflicts on humanity. At the same time, the villagers form a bond through acquiring and sharing food even though they are trapped in the fear of war and food crisis. They work together to scavenge food in ruined villages, share pork with each other and care for one another. The act of sharing pork not only satisfies the basic need of eliminating hunger but also strengthens the sense of unity among those who have fled. This emotional bond and collective consciousness help provide psychological serenity. The spirit of sharing and solidarity in times of war symbolizes the true human values and healthy human relationships, offering enlightenment for overcoming the division of the Korean Peninsula. Thus, it can be seen that the study on The Boy Born in 1941 from the perspective of food offers a new way to understand its significance. This approach allows researchers to move beyond the path of previous studies on Moon Soon-tae’s works and provides direction for broader and deeper exploration of his other literary contributions from the perspective of food.
