Abstract
(Laṅkāvatārasūtra, LAS) presents a way to reach supreme insight through a complete knowledge(parijñāna) of "appearance(dṛśya)" called "Manifestation by a self-mind"(自心所現: svacittadṛśyamātra). Indeed, Manifestation by the self-mind is a imagined thing and when the imagined mind is removed by the complete knowledge, the imagined mind changes as 如來藏(tathāgatagarbha) ālayavijñāna by the complete knowledge power. This paper compares the concept of appearance (pratibhāsa) in 中邊分別論(Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya, MAVBh) and examines the core meaning handed down. It(tathāgatagarbha) is “Perfectly accomplished Nature”(pariniṣpanna-svabhāva), equated with ālaya-vijñāna, developed Three-Nature(Trisvabhāva), [8]consciousness(vijñānāni) and 2-nairātmya in five categories(Pañcadharmeṣu). However, with the previously published Sanskrit text the Nanjio’s edition(1923), Tibetan Station(D, P) and Han Station(T 670) do not match the contents of the LAS, and it‘s difficult to convey a consistent meaning. Therefore, this paper compares previously noncontrasting copies together and compares their meanings. They compared copies NGMPP(DSCN A112-9) found after The Nanjio’s edition, Tibetan Station(D, P) and an explanatory Texts(JV) and all three Han Stations(T 3), and also reviewed the evidences that meets its meaning. Manifestation by the self-mind sometimes indicates external manifestation, but by a change of heart(cittaparāvṛtti) we are reached “Perfectly accomplished Nature”. Therefore, the manifestation by the self-mind is mind classified in term of the grasping(grāhaka) and being grasped parts(grāhya), and it means the continuous removal of the mind developed in various vijñānāni within the five laws by a complete knowledge. In addition, in MAVBh, "appearance(顯現, pratibhāsa)" expressed in a dual structure that is the grasping on ālaya-vijñāna as abhūta-parikalpa(虛妄分別) and being grasped parts as the object. If vijñāna occurs as appear of ātma, etc., it will become the content of the vijñāna or the phenomenal characteristic of the vijñāna. in this context “Dependent Nature”(paratantra-svabhāva) implies ālayavijñāna of change of vijñāna, and based on vijñānapariṇāma of ālaya-vijñāna in “Imagined Nature”(parikalpita-svabhāva) by the grasping and being grasped parts, turns to thusness(tathatā). Therefore, in this scripture, appearance shows that it is being of ālaya-vijñāna by the complete knowledge as an object to be removed.
