초록

This study investigates why Korean learners have difficulties in pronouncing some sonorant clusters of English including liquids. We point out that L1 phonology interferes with L2 acquisition and that the more similar L2 sounds are to those in L1, the more difficult learners tend to feel in pronouncing L2. Thus, the understanding of differences between L1 and L2 phonology will be required to teach and learn L2 much more effectively. In Korean, sonorant clusters can be a trigger to incur place assimilation under the undominated constraint, SYLLCON, which causes Korean learners to make errors in L2 acquisition although SYLLCON does not play any special role in sonorant clusters of English. We study the many studies about the matter and point out the problem in their works. Subjects who pronounce /nl/ cluster within or beyond a morpheme boundary into /nn/ were perceived to place 'pause in the coda. Thus, we suggest IDENCODAP-(NAS) constraint for the individual variation to avoid reranking order. In addition, we suggest that it can be recommended for learners to use a 'pause' function in learning.
