A Study on the Role of Hand Gestures Co-occurring with Demonstratives –Based on the Analysis of Multimodal Corpus

The purpose of the study is to review and criticize referentialism, including the theory by Kaplan (1989), based on the analysis of a multimodal corpus inspired by salience-based approaches to a demonstrative resolution. Three hypotheses are drawn from the arguments of Kaplan. First, deictic demonstratives refer to entities in the real world. Second, deictic demonstratives should co-occur with deictic hand gestures, but anaphoric demonstratives should not. Third, deictic demonstratives should co-occur exclusively with deictic hand gestures. These hypotheses are rejected by the result of an empirical analysis. In conclusion, the analysis of a multimodal corpus shows that Kaplan (1989) cannot fully explain the relation between the resolution of demonstratives and hand gestures in Korean.
