This paper examines how the hero’s suicide is stylized and becomes a character in Nikolai Erdman’s play, The Suicide. In addition, this paper also determines which meaning the hero’s attempt to kill himself acquires, referring to the common and different points between the suicides in bygone ages and the one depicted in this play. Based on this analysis, the article explains that The Suicide depicts both the comedic and uncanny connections between Petunin’s existential suicide and Podsekal’nikov’s suicide by nervous breakdown.
Abstract
