The objective of this paper is to reveal how Japanese honorific expressions with request function are explained from the perspective of pragmatics. The act of request is asking or demanding that the other person do something. Here, since the content of such request benefits the speaker himself or herself rather than the listener, the request inevitably places burden on the latter. As such, appropriate consideration for the listener must be exercised in using expressions of request. The present paper views honorifics as such consideration through linguistic forms exhibited in situations involving request. Under this context, this study utilizes felicity condition, a concept by Searle, to explain the meaning of honorific expressions with request function from the perspective of pragmatics.
