초록
The purpose of this study is to investigate the interpreting quality criteria of Korea’s interpreting officers. Firstly, the study surveys 11 interpreting officers in the Korean military to examine which quality criteria are deemed important by the officers. Next, the officers are asked to evaluate recorded videos of interpreting-officer trainees working both from Korean to English and from English to Korean. Finally, the study uses SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) to analyze the interpreting officers’ evaluation of the trainees. The results of the evaluation are then compared with the expectations survey results. Over the years, expectation surveys have shown that professional interpreters regard “content-related” criteria more important than “form-related” or “delivery-related” criteria. Results of this study’s expectation survey are consistent with previous research results: interpreting officers also regard content-related criteria as the most important criteria. However, actual evaluation results show with statistical significance that form-related criteria have higher impact on the total score than any other criteria regardless of interpreting directions. Additionally, the study suggests that delivery-related criteria such as “pleasant voice” and “native accent” have negligible impact on the overall performance score.
