Abstract

This study systematically examines the potential and limitations of #LancsBox X as a tool for Chinese text analysis within the field of digital humanities. #LancsBox X demonstrates strengths in analyzing the syntactic and semantic characteristics of Chinese text through core functions such as KWIC, Words, and GraphColl. In particular, the visualization of collocational relationships allows researchers to effectively capture the patterns and semantic connections within the text. With its flexibility in data manipulation and powerful visualization tools, #LancsBox X provides significant possibilities for large-scale Chinese text studies in digital humanities. Despite these advantages, some core functions are primarily optimized for English and European languages, making it difficult to fully account for the unique linguistic characteristics of Chinese. For instance, #LancsBox X offers limited support for lemma and headword searches in Chinese text, and morphological tagging requires separate word segmentation during corpus construction. Additionally, CQL syntax integrated with regular expressions and smart search terms remains predominantly English-oriented, leading to challenges when applied to Chinese. Addressing these limitations in future updates would enhance #LancsBox X’s flexibility as a multilingual analytical tool and expand its contribution to Chinese research within digital humanities.
