Abstract
This study analyzes the realization patterns of verb-like constructions in Chinese adjectives from a scale structure perspective. Applying Lassiter's (2017) scale typology, adjectives from the 『HANYU XINGRONGCIYONGFACIDIAN』 were classified into ratio, interval, and ordinal scales, with each further subdivided into open and closed types. Systematic correlations were confirmed between scale structures and aspectual marker combinations, with the perfective marker ‘了’ showing a preference pattern of ‘physical attributes>emotions/evaluations>state attributes’. Two distinct pathways exist for the realization of verb-like constructions in adjectives: temporality and fictivity. Ratio scales preferentially express concrete quantitative changes and controllable actions, interval scales convey relative degree changes and sensory experiences, and ordinal scales indicate sustained states and conditional occurrences. This research demonstrates that the verbalization of Chinese adjectives is a phenomenon based on intrinsic scale structures and contributes to the field by offering a cognitive linguistic interpretation.
