두 평생교육학 교수의 생애전환에 관한 내러티브 연구

초록

이 연구는 두 평생교육학 교수의 드라마틱한 생애 경험을 전환학습의 관점에서 밝혀보고자 하였다. 두 교수의 생애사건에 나타난 내러티브를 통해 생애경험을 이해하고 전환의 의미를 조명하였다. 이를 위해 인간 경험의 이해와 의미 부여에 가장 적합한 내러티브 연구방법을 적용하였으며, 참여자 인터뷰, 현장노트, 저술, 사진 등의 자료를 수집하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 참여자는 최근 개봉한 영화 ‘국제시장’의 모티브가 되었던 ‘파독광부’ 출신의 평생교육학 교수와 군 부사관 출신의 평생교육학 교수이다. 이들은 군인과 광부라는 전혀 이질적인 세계에서 대학교수로의 인생역전을 일궈낸 장본인들이다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 두 교수의 생애전환에 가장 큰 영향을 미친 전환의 유형은 예상하지 못하고 뜻하지 않은 상황에서 발생한 생애사건이었다. 둘째, 두 교수의 생애전환에서는 Mezirow가 제시한 전환학습 10단계가 모두 발견되지는 않았으며 일부 과정은 통합되거나 단계를 건너뛰는 양상을 보였다. 그리고 두 교수의 생애전환에서는 내면적 관점의 의식변화 뿐 만 아니라 행동 변화를 통한 직업적 전환까지도 나타났다. 이는 개인적 변화를 넘어 사회적 변화까지 확장시킨 진정한 학습의 의미를 보여주었다. 두 교수의 생애전환에 영향을 미친 요인은 Mezirow가 제시한 비판적 반성과 이성적 담론이기도 했지만, 인간적 관계와 협력, 지원이라는 관계적 요인도 두드러지게 나타났다. 마지막으로 전환학습의 진행 양상은 개인적 특성에 따라, 생애 사건의 맥락과 상황에 따라 다르게 나타났다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to disclose two lifelong education professors’ experience of life transitions from the viewpoint of transformative learning. Through vivid narratives appearing in dramatic life event that the two professors experienced, this study interpreted the experience and meaning of their life transitions. Thus, this study applied the narrative research method that is one of the most appropriate inquiry methods to understand personal experience. One of the two research participants was a professor of lifelong education studies who used to be a Korean mineworker in Germany that became a motive for the movie, ‘Ode to my Father (2014),’ and another was a professor of lifelong education studies who used to be a non-commissioned officer in the Korea military. They were people who managed to successfully make life transitions from absolute hetero generous worlds, let’s say, a serviceman and a mineworker into university professors. And they seemed to be different but shared similarities. The results of this study are as follows. First, aspects of transitions most significantly affecting two professors’ career transitions were found to happen in unexpected and accidental situations. Second, all of Mezirow’s 10 stages of transformative learning were not revealed in two professors’ career transitions, and some of the processes were shown to be skipped. And two professors’ transitions were found to happen not only in change of internal viewpoints but also in job transitions through change of behaviors. Two professors’ life transitions showed a true meaning of learning to be expanded from beyond personal change to social change. Lastly, factors affecting two professors’ life transitions were found to be mostly critical reflection and rational discourse on reason presented by Mezirow, but relative factors of humanistic relationship and support at the same time.
