초록

This study reports on an investigation into temporal, technical, and web-searching efforts during the post-editing process compared with translation from scratch. A total of 13 translation trainees without formal post-editing education were asked to post-edit and translate economic texts from Korean to English without time constraints. The process was recorded with keystroke logging and screen recording programs. According to the analysis results, post-editing was mostly faster than human translation, although there were considerable individual differences in productivity improvement. In terms of technical efforts, post-editing involved reduced keystroke activities with less insertion and deletion events, but other events showed mixed results, implying that navigation efforts can also be partly influenced by keyboarding styles. The frequency of web searching declined in the process of post-editing, while searching channels remained almost unchanged. These findings provide some useful insights into post-editing education, suggesting the need of further investigations on efforts in the post-editing process.

Abstract

The frequency of web searching declined in the process of post-editing, while searching channels remained almost unchanged. These findings provide some useful insights into post-editing education, suggesting the need of further investigations on efforts in the post-editing process.
