Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the level of physical activity on depression, anxiety, and heart rate variability (HRV) in adult women. A total of 58 subjects aged 18~28 years old were participated and they were divided into the three groups including low physical activity (LG, N=20), middle physical activity (MG, N=20), and vigorous physical activity (VG, N=18). Depression was observed by Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and anxiety was assessed by State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). HRV was measured by a portable electrocardiograph, and physical activity was assessed using an accelerometer for 5 days of daily life. The results showed a significant difference in STAI-X1 between the groups. VG had significantly lower STAI-X1 (p<.05) compared to other groups. However, no difference was found in BDI-II, STAI-X2. HRV, BDI-II and STAI-X2 between the groups. STAI-X1 was associated with the amount of physical activity significantly (p<.05), no relationship with depression, anxiety, and HRV. This study suggest that VG had a positive effect on STAI-X1 and the amount of physical activity was related to STAI-X1. For the future studies, the relationship between mental health and types of physical activity should be determined.
