도농 간 중학생 학력격차 감소에 미치는 학교교육의 영향

이 연구는 도농 간 학력격차와 그 변화에 학교교육이 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 KELS:2005의 1~3차년도 자료를 활용하여 3-수준 다층모형으로 설명변인과 지역변인 간 상호작용항을 구성하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 도농 간 중학생 학력격차는 초기 격차에 비하여 학년이 올라갈수록 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 도농 간 초기 성적의 차이는 사회경제적 배경과 지역에 따른 선별효과에 의해 나타났으며 지역의 교육 환경에 의해 확대되었다. 반면 도농 간 학력격차의 감소는 학교풍토에 의해 나타났다. 학생들의 성적 향상에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 학구적인 풍토-교사의 학업 강조, 학생의 수업태도, 학생의 규율위반 행동-와 공동체적 풍토-학생의 교사에 대한 신뢰, 학부모의 학교교육 만족도, 학부모 간 상호작용-는 도시지역보다 읍면지역에서 더 높게 나타나며 그 영향도 더 크게 나타났다. 즉, 읍면지역 학교에서 높게 나타나는 학구적인 풍토와 공동체적 풍토는 학생의 성적 향상 뿐 아니라 도농 간 학력격차 감소에 영향을 미친다. 이러한 결과는 읍면지역 학교가 지역사회를 기반으로 한 사회자본을 형성함으로써 읍면지역 학생들에게 부족한 가정의 교육지원을 대신한다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 읍면지역과 같은 열악한 지역의 학교와 학생들에 대한 지원에 있어 ‘돌봄’ 기능이 중요함을 의미한다. 아울러 비록 읍면지역 학교의 긍정적인 학교풍토가 도농 간 학력격차를 감소시키지만 여전히 사회경제적 배경과 그에 따른 교육지원의 차이는 일정 정도의 격차를 유지시킨다는 점에서 지금까지 이루어졌던 노력들, 즉 도농 간 교육환경의 차이를 개선하는 일과 열악한 학생들에 대한 복지 차원의 노력도 지속될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study analyzes the school effect on achievement growth and on decreasing achievement gap between urban and rural middle school students using KELS:2005 data which includes 6,908 students of 150 middle school during first grade in 2005 to third grade in 2007. As a result, the initial achievement gap between rural and urban school was due to students' socio-economical background, especially the difference to access private education and educational support from home. On the achievement growth, high academic climate, stabled school climate, trust between students and teachers have effect. These school climates effected more in rural school than in urban school. As these school climates appear better and effect more in rural schools, they decrease the achievement gap between urban and rural students. But although rural schools have their school effect on decreasing rural-urban achievement gap, it still exists. Because of their low socio-economical status and insufficient educational support form home, the initial achievement gap still somewhat exists. These results mean that though rural schools have some disadvantages from their socio-economical background of students, they have some strength to achievement improvement and reducing the achievement gap between rural and urban students. So not only filling up educational resources of rural schools, it need to support rural schools to make its own strength and school climate which can overcome the educational gap between urban schools.
