Abstract

(Purpose) This study explores the retirement process and adaptation challenges faced by elite rhythmic gymnastics retirees by analyzing their experiences of identity transformation, career choices, and changes in social relationships. (Methods) The study participants were former elite rhythmic gymnasts (n=7), and a qualitative case study design was employed in this research to explore and reflect on the changes and emotions they experienced after retirement. (Results) The results revealed that after retirement, athletes sought to establish their identities by exploring various career opportunities or challenging themselves in new fields. Additionally, most athletes chose career paths related to rhythmic gymnastics, whereas some pursued different fields outside rhythmic gymnastics and engaged in academic studies alongside vocational retraining. Furthermore, the strong sense of belonging formed during athletic careers gradually diminishes after retirement, often leading to feelings of psychological isolation. Fourth, many athletes experienced psychological emptiness after retirement, and some reported symptoms of depression or anxiety. (Conclusion) These findings are expected to contribute to supporting the successful adaptation of retired athletes and help establish fundamental measures for maintaining a healthy life after retirement.
