Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to analyzed social difficulties and de-socialization that appeared during the retirement process and to identify career constraints that do not return to the athlete. Method In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 college taekwondo athletes who experienced retirement due to injuries, and inductive categorical set analysis was conducted. Results First, concerns about retirement due to injury and life after sports were manifested as retirement resulting from physical and psychological stress caused by injury, and difficulties in identity transition due to involuntary retirement. Second, career barriers for athletes retiring due to injury were identified as lack of career information and limited career exploration due to sudden retirement, constraints on career exploration due to economic burden, and psychological impacts of involuntary retirement after injury. Conclusion It can be seen that college taekwondo athletes who have experienced sudden retirement due to injuries commonly experience physical and psychological stress after retirement, causing identity confusion and presenting as career barriers. Therefore, various career-related information should be provided to athletes to prevent career preparation behavior and de-socialization of college taekwondo athletes, and measures should be prepared to expand career choices, such as support for career change programs and economic scholarship systems, and to ease career barriers.
