Abstract

There has been two interpretations of ‘Nation’. The first one argues that ‘nation’ has existed from past. But the second one argues that it has been invented from modern period. This article is to examine the case of Korean modern period. To do so, it deals with KukMinSuJi(ꡔ國民須知ꡕ) published around 1905~1908 using textual and contextual approach. It had been published several versions as articles and books during era of enlightenment (1905~1910) in Korea. The word KukMin(國民) was borrowed from chinese classics and retranslated. KukMinSuJi used the word ‘nation’ with notions of ‘embedded human right’ or ‘duty of nation’ which was totally modern concepts and differentiated it from ‘people’ which inferred human resources or components of the modern state. And cautiously, it did not use the word ‘nation’ with sovereignty which, by its meaning, constituted the state. Therefore, the word ‘nation’ in KukMinSuJi was used as a means of mobilization for making modern state and never identified with sovereign. We may conclude that the elite of modern Korea were conservative to make a modern sovereign ‘nation’. They did not want to alienate their power to the people.
