인구사의 연구는 1950년대에 시작된 역사인구학의 발달에 의해 크게 활성화되었다. 유럽을 비롯해 일본, 중국에서도 역사인구학이 본격적으로 진행되고 있는 상황 속에서 한국에서는 아직 역사인구학적인 연구는 초보 단계에 머물고 있다. 앞으로 한국에서도 역사인구학적인 연구 방법을 이용하는 것이 가능한지, 이것이 본 논문의 검토과제이다.유럽이나 일본, 중국의 역사인구학의 성과로서 가장 주목될 부분은 각 지역마다 다양한 인구 조절 기능이 존재했다는 점이다. 이러한 문제와 관련해서 조선시대 한국사회에서도 인구 조절이 널리 존재했는지를 구명하는 작업이 가장 중요하다고 생각되는데, 그것을 위해서는 조선시대 호적대장의 자료적 성격의 검토와 그 이용방법의 개발, 그리고 족보의 활용을 적극적으로 진행시켜야 된다.
Abstract
The study of population history was revitalized by the development of historical demography beginning in the 1950’s. In Korea the study of historical demography is still in an early stage, while in Japan and China as well as in Europe it is going on actively. Now is it possible to use the research method of historical demography in Korea, too? It is the subject I discussed in this paper. As a fruit of historical demography in Europe, Japan and China, we should keep an eye on the fact that there were various systems of population control in every district. In connection with this fact, I think it most important that we study whether there was population control widely in the Chosun dynasty as well. For the purpose of this study, we should examine a character of household register of the Chosun dynasty, develop a method to use it, and make the good use of genealogy positively.
