Abstract
It can be said that the tradition of calligraphy and painting in the Joseon Dynasty was carried on to modern calligraphy and painting in Jeollabuk-do. There was no one famous for calligraphy and painting in Jeollabuk-do in Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, Yi Jeong- Jik would have been self-taught because he could not find a teacher to teach painting for him. At the beginning of the selection of Jeollabuk-do as ‘Art town(藝鄕)’, there was Yi Jeong-jik(1841~1910). Many people came to him to become a disciple, and the growing wave created the modern Jeonbuk art history. Jo Byeong-heon趙秉憲 (1876~1938) was born in Gimje and has been known as one of Lee Jeong-jik’s pupils. According to genealogy records and related records, it was known that he went to Seoul to interact with calligraphers and related officials, and he in later years, came down to his hometown of Gimje and enjoyed his life reading books and so on. In this paper, through the relics handed down through the family, it was possible to confirm the extensive relationship of the Jo Byung-hun family from Jeollabuk-do to the Seoul art gallery and it was found that Jo Byung-hun was specially good at his calligraphy and bamboo painting. The importance of this study lies in solving the puzzle in the large flow of art history in Jeonbuk from the modern era to the present, by finding the missing piece, Cho Byung-hun.
