Abstract
We performed this study to recognize theoretically important explanations in students' exact understanding of the concepts of the atomic model, its orbit, and their relationship. We used the questionnaire to check comprehension of the atomic model and orbital concepts. Two hundred forty-seven students who were taking general chemistry courses from three universities participated in the questionnaire. The findings were as follow. First, the results revealed that 63.2% of students were able to properly explain the atomic model. To have completed a high school course in Chemistry II was a statistically significant factor with (p=0.01). Second, the results revealed that 78.9% of students were able to properly explain the orbital concept. To have completed a course in Inorganic Chemistry was a statistically significant factor with (p<0.001). Third, the results revealed that 24.7% of students were able to properly explain the relationship between the atomic model and the orbital concepts. To have completed a course in Inorganic Chemistry was a statistically significant factor with (p =0.024). Finally, we investigated the differences in the explanation methods which affect students'understanding of atomic model and orbital concepts in Chemistry II and Inorganic Chemistry
