Abstract
This study investigated the effects of question generation, text coherence, and prior knowledge on the comprehension of main ideas in an expository text. Three factorial design was used. The three factors were the conditions of question generation (thinking questionㆍmemory questionㆍcontrol), text coherence level (highㆍlow), and prior knowledge level of the text theme (highㆍlow). The criterion variables were the recalling of the main points and an understanding of the main ideas in the text. The participants were 117 high school junior students selected randomly on the basis of their level of prior knowledge about the traits of mammals. The stimulus materials were two expository texts: a low coherent text and a high coherent text. The main findings of this study were as follows. First, generating thinking questions using signal words while reading facilitated the recall of the main points of the text and the ability to extract the main ideas in each paragraph. These effects, however, were not significant with respect to the conditions of thinking or memory questions. Second, the high coherent expository text facilitated an understanding of the main ideas of each paragraph, but the low coherent expository text facilitated an understanding of the main ideas of the overall text. Third, the facilitative effects of generating thinking questions on the recall of the main points and the comprehension of the main ideas in each paragraph were observed regardless of the levels of text coherence and prior knowledge. Different effects between levels of text coherence on the comprehension of the main ideas of each paragraph and the overall text were observed regardless of the levels of prior knowledge.
