경남지역 인문계 고등학교 영어교사의 교직 활동에 관한 인식 연구

초록

본 연구는 고등학교영어교사들의 교직 생활의 대표적인 활동인 수업, 학생 및 학부모와의 관계, 근무환경, 교직인식 대해서 살펴 보았다. 본 연구를 위해서 경남지역 15개 인문계 고등학교 총 126명의 영어교사가 참여하였으며 설문조사를 활용하여 조사하였다. 교사들은 개인적인 수업 능력에 관해서는 대체로 긍정적인 응답을 하였으나 실제 수업은 여러 가지 제약으로 다양한 수업 활동을 수업에 적용하기보다는 설명식 수업을 하고 있다고 응답하였다. 교사들은 학생들의 선행학습으로 인한 수준 차이, 과목에 대한 무관심, 수업준비 시간의 부족, 그리고 학력 향상에 대한 압박을 어려움의 요인으로 꼽았다. 학생과 학무모의 관계에 있어서는 큰 문제가 없다고 인식하고 있었으나 학생 지도의 어려움과 교사의 권위는 점점 떨어지고 있다고 인식하고 있었다. 본 연구에 참여한 영어 교사들은 자신들의 업무를 전문직으로서의 업무 수행이라기보다 잡무성에 더 가깝다고 응답하였고 타 교과에 비해 업무가 많다고 느끼고 있었다. 또한 현 영어교육 정책이 교육 현장과는 거리가 있다고 강하게 인식하고 있었다. 이러한 인식은 특히 교사 경력 4년 이하의 교사 집단에서 가장 높게 나타나 교직관 형성 시기의 교사들의 교직 생활 경험이 긍정적이지 않음을 보여주고 있다. 또한 직업 선택의 기회가 다시 주어진다면 교직을 다시 선택할 것인가란 문항에 총 126명의 교사 중 절반에도 못 미치는 52명의 교사들만이 선택하겠다고 응답하여 급변하는 교육현장의 어려움으로 인한 교직이탈이 심화될 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 52명의 교사 중 28명은 다른 과목, 다른 학교급으로 하여 교직을 선택하겠다는 응답을 보여 현재 고등학교 영어 교사들이 교과목 지도에 어려움을 겪고 있음을 시사하고 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate high school English teachers' perceptions about their teaching job. The study focused on four areas; instruction, relationship with students and parents, working environment, and teaching profession. For this study, 126 English teachers from 15 different middle schools in Kyungnam province participated, and a questionnaire was used for the investigation. The findings revealed that the teachers perceived positively the effect of English class on students' English learning, and their dedication and confidence to English teaching was high. However, the teachers responded that they mainly used grammar translation method in class and viewed the lack of time for preparing their class and various limitations using learner-centered activities as the most significant problem. Also, the teachers responded that they had hard time in class because of students' demotivation and students' different English proficiency. Teachers in this study felt stressed due to the teaching load and excessive nonessential workload. It should be noted that among 126 English teachers, only 26 English teachers answered that they would be a high school English teacher if they could choose a teaching job again. In order to adequately support hight school English teachers, the factors influencing teachers' perceptions should be explored in relation to the teaching career and the size of the school.
