Abstract
This research was performed to get some idea for the direction of Korean elementary science education in terms of educational objectives, teaching methods, and teaching content. This research was performed by observing 36 elementary science classes and interviewing elementary teachers and students. Data were collected November 2006 to February 2007 in the middle size cities of two countries. Twelve elementary teachers were participated in this research by showing their ordinary science classes. The results showed two countries’ science teaching was statistically different in terms of educational objectives and teaching methods. American elementary 1st science teaching emphasized scientific inquiry more than Korean elementary 1st grade science teaching. But Korean 4th grade science teaching aimed scientific inquiry two times more than American 4th grade science teaching. American elementary science classes used lecture method more than experiment or observation method, but Korean elementary science classes used experiment or observation method more than lecture method. Korean 1st grade science teaching contents should be reconsidered in terms of scientific inquiry and basic science concepts. Korean elementary students now have the learning chance of science concepts systematically two years later than American students.
