Abstract

This article aims at exploring views on Yodong appeared in literary works by Chosŏn envoys who were dispatched to Ming China in the 15th and 16th centuries and Yukdang Choi Namsun's travel sketches 'Songmagyununrok' in its relation with the envoying literary tradition. Since her foundation Ming China used to raise the tension on Koryo and Chosŏn surrounding Yodong, and therefore Yodong was very much cautious, critical topic between two countries. Yukdang's trip to Yodong was supported by Sunman(Chosŏn-Manchuria) colonization company, and its travel description was published in serial form on Maeilsinbo, an organ paper of Chosŏn government-general. The serials reflecting the author's own consciousness and sincerity, nevertheless, can't simply be underestimated as works which represent Japanese evil design. Above all his trip to Yodong could be included in the tradition of envoys' literary works, and in addition it might be called as an academic journey confirming the status of Yodong through thoroughgoing research of its historical facts. The Chosŏn's color of this place Yukdang described had something to do with people moved from Chosŏn, and so it is exactly in accord with Japanese plot wishing to regard Chosŏn and Manchuria as one united body. Accordingly it may be different from 'hereditary customs' Chosŏn envoys noticed, but the meaning highlighting our owns preserved in Manchuria seems to have no difference. The difference between Yukdang and past envoys lies in their emphasis on Baektap [White Tower]. Yukdang considered it as challenge and victory of Kokuryo and at the same time as symbol of Yoyang showing that the place was originally our own national territory. Another difference lies in their descriptions of Emperor Taejong of Tang China: Chosŏn envoys focuses on his arrogance highlighting his moral defect, whereas Yukdang depicted persistently the emperor's loss of eyesight by Yang Manchun, Kokuryo general, embodying and enhancing further the sense of victory. Although the national concern about Yodong would be meaningless without the background of existing nation, and in this regard it is true Yukdang's recognition on Yodong has limits, but 'Songmagyununrok' should be revaluated in that the present significance of Yodong consists, most of all. in recovering its 'history', and the serials could be situated in the traditional context of Chosŏn envoys literary works.
