PISA 2009 읽기성취도 데이터를 활용한 학교효과 분석

초록

이 연구는 다층분석을 활용하여 PISA 2009 읽기성취도에 대한 학생 및 학교 수준의 투입변수와 과정변수의 영향력을 분석하고, 학교효과와 관련 있는 학교의 인적‧물적 자원, 학생의 가정 배경 등과 같이 개별 학교가 통제할 수 없는 투입변수의 영향력을 통계적으로 통제하여 학교 간에 존재하는 불평등 요인의 효과를 제거한 상태에서 학교효과지수(SEI)를 산출하기 위해서 수행되었다. 이 연구는 OECD에서 주관하여 시행한 만 15세 대상의 PISA 2009 자료 중에서 우리나라 121개 고등학교 학교와 이 학교들에 소속된 3,619명의 학생의 자료를 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, PISA 2009 읽기성취도에 통계적으로 유의한 영향을 주는 학생 수준의 변수는 성별과 경제‧사회‧문화적 지위(ESCS), 읽기 즐거움, 매일 읽기 참여시간, 그리고 읽기전략 중 요약전략과 통제전략이었다. 또한 학교 수준의 변수에는 설립유형, 학교평균 ESCS, 교사당 학생비율, 학생행동, 학교평균 읽기 즐거움 변수가 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 단순평균 학교효과 점수와 학교 간에 존재하는 불평등 요인의 효과를 제거한 학교효과지수를 비교한 결과, 단순평균 학교효과에서는 하위권에 있던 학교들이 상위권으로 향상되었거나 상위권을 유지하는 학교들도 있었다. 다시 말하자면 학교 간에 존재하는 불평등 요인의 효과를 통제하기 전과 후의 학교효과가 다르게 나타날 수 있다는 것이다. 마지막으로 이 연구에서는 학교효과 및 학교효과지수를 종합하여 논의 및 결론을 제시하였다.

Abstract

This study, by using multi-level analyses, analyzed the effects of the input and process variables of the student- and school-levels on reading achievement in PISA 2009. By statistically controlling the effects of input variables of individual schools, such as the human and physical resources relevant to school effects, this study indicates that the school effects indices were unaffected by the unequal factors between schools. This study was based on the data of 3,619 students from 121 high schools in South Korea. It was extracted from the PISA 2009 data which was conducted by the OECD. The results were as follows. First, in PISA 2009, gender, ESCS, reading enjoyment, the duration of daily reading participation; and, among reading strategies, summarization and controlling strategies were the variables that statistically affected reading achievement. In addition, the type of establishment, the average ESCS of the school, the student-teacher ratio, student behavior, and reading enjoyment of the school were significant variables at the school level. Second, this study estimated the school effects after statistically controlling the contextual input variables of each school. This indicated that effective schools showed two distinctive factors: the student behavior and reading enjoyment of the school. Last, this study presents discussion and conclusions with respect to school effects.
