Abstract
This paper explores how tactile imagination, metaphor, and experience involved in the reception of photography in late nineteenth century Japan. Specifically, it focuses on the relation between tactility and early photographic experiences by looking at photographic terminologies, photographic crafts and small prints. During the 1850s, common people believed that a photographic image was the outcome of physical movement and contact between a person and the camera’s body. Such a tactile imagination reflects both the awe-inspiring nature of photography and the anxiety and tension that arose from encountering the Western Other. As photography became increasingly popular in the 1870s, it was understood as a useful tool for the ‘civilized’ people to produce the visual representation of their nation. Here, the sense of touch became associated with photographic terminologies, serving as a metaphor for the cognitive practice of learning and grasping the ‘civilized.’ With the rapid progress of the photographic technology, a diversity of tactile photographic objects were created and circulated in a nationwide level. In particular, pocket-sized photographs of Buddhist statues served not only as the object of intimate personal appreciation, but also as the object of communal sentiment and emotion during the wartime period.
