영어교육의 목표가 의사소통을 위해 다양한 문화 간 이해를 포함하는 방향으로 바뀌고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 사범대 영어교육과 전공필수 과목인 문화교육과목에 적용할 프로젝트 기반 학습 수업모형을 개발하고 운영하면서 학습자 관점을 고찰하였다. 프로젝트 기반 문화 수업모형은 Stoller(1997)의 10단계 프로젝트 기반 언어교실 수업모형을 사범대 예비영어교사 문화 수업에 맞게 11단계로 수정한 후, 지방소재 S 대학교 영어교육전공 교과목인 “영미문화의 이해”에 적용하였다. 연구참여자는 해당 교과목 수강생 3학년 학생 중 11명이다. 프로젝트 기반 문화교육 수업모형에 대한 학습자의 관점은 (1) 주별 프로젝트 저널, (2) 웹 기반 프로젝트, (3) 사후 성찰 보고서를 통해 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 결과는 다음과 같다. 학습자의 긍정적인 반응은 (1) 다양한 문화 간 이해와 지식함양, (2) 영어연습, (3) 비판적 사고능력 개발 측면이었다. 부정적인 반응은 과도한 프로젝트 과업에 대한 부담이었다. 본 연구를 토대로 영어 예비교사교육에서 프로젝트 기반 문화교육에대한 제안은 과업의 단순화와 모델링 제공이다.
Abstract
In line with the increasing importance of cultural understanding for the sake of communication, this study aims to implement Cultural Learning (CL) through project work in pre-service secondary English teacher education. This study implemented a framework of CL by modifing Stoller’s (1997) Project-Based Learning (PBL) model into a model of eleven steps for eight weeks into the a CL class. The study used three data sources from 11 students: (1) weekly project journals, (2) web-based projects, and (3) post-project reflection notes. The results are as follows. First, the study identified three perceived PBL’s benefits: intercultural knowledge construction, English language practice, and critical thinking skills development. Second, PBL’s challenges included many time-consuming tasks. The study concludes with two suggestions for pedagogical methods: simplification of tasks and modeling.
