Abstract

In 1778 (the 2nd year of King Jeongjo’s reign), Yu Deuk-gong wrote the initial edited edition of Isibildohoegosi(Reminiscent poems of 21 capital cities) after reading Korean historical geography books and reflecting on 21 ancient countries and 16 capital cities. Later, in 1792 (the 16th year of King Jeongjo’s reign), inspired by the interest of Qing dynasty scholars, he authored a revised edition annotated anew with reference to ancient historical records. The initial edited edition has survived only in manuscript form, while the revised edition exists in both woodblock and manuscript versions. The initial edited edition contains 37 poems and is composed of administrative names of Joseon, ancient state names, seven-character poems, and annotations. In the revised edition, two poems from the initial edited edition were removed, and eight new poems were added, bringing the total to 43. The title, author's name, and format slightly differ between various initial edited edition, though there is no major difference in content; however, typographical errors and the method of annotation vary. In the revised edition, the names of the author Yu Deuk-gong and editor Yi Deok-mu are recorded. The preface section includes prefaces written in 1785 and 1792, along with a table of contents. The main text consists of the name of each country, number of poems, a brief historical description of the country, geographical explanations of its capital, seven-character poems, and annotations. While the revised edition clearly identifies all referenced sources, the initial edited edition includes citations without specifying the sources. In the initial edited edition, Yu primarily used Korean historical records such as Samguksagi, Samgukyusa, Ginyeonaram, as well as geographical texts like Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam(新增東國輿地勝覽), Dongguk Munheon Bigo(東國文獻備考), and local gazetteers of various regions. On the other hand, in the revised edition, Ginyeonaram was entirely omitted, and there was a clear tendency to prioritize and extensively reference Chinese historical texts. Geographical information was mainly verified using Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam and the geography section of Dongguk Munheon Bigo.
