한국인의 다문화 수용성 결정요인 분석: 교육수준의 영향을 중심으로

본 연구는 교육수준을 중심으로 한국인의 다문화 수용성에 영향을 미치는 요인들 사이의 구조적 관계를 파악하고, 이러한 관계가 세대에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지 살펴보기 위해 수행되었다. 한국종합사회조사(KGSS) 2010년도 데이터를 활용하여 구조방정식모형 분석을 실시한 결과, 교육수준이 다문화 수용성에 직접적으로는 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 드러났다. 그렇지만 교육수준은 이주민에 대한 사회적 거리감과 위협의식을 뚜렷하게 감소시킴으로써, 간접적으로는 다문화 수용성에 강력한 정적 효과를 발휘하고 있었다. 이에 따라 전체적으로는 교육수준이 높아지면 다문화 수용성도 유의미하게 높아지는 것으로 판명되었다. 한편 세대별 집단 비교분석 결과는 전체적으로 다문화 수용성에 대한 교육수준의 효과가 젊은 세대에 비해 나이가 많은 세대에서 훨씬 약함을 보여주었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 교육수준의 상승 그 자체만으로는 다문화 수용성 제고를 담보하기 어렵기 때문에 학교교육이 다문화 수용성을 제고하기 위해 학생들의 시민의식 함양에 보다 적극적인 노력을 기울이는 것이 중요하다는 시사점을 도출할 수 있었다. 아울러 상대적으로 나이가 많은 연령집단에 대해서는 평생교육 차원에서 다문화 시민교육을 지속적으로 제공하는 일이 중요하다는 사실도 유추할 수 있었다.
Abstract
Drawing on 2010 Korean General Social Survey(KGSS) data, this study attempts to explore the structural relationships between determinants of Koreans' multicultural acceptability and examine how the relationships vary by generation. Toward that end, structural equation model method was employed with special attention to the effect of educational attainment. The results show that educational attainment does not exert a direct effect on the multicultural acceptability. However, it does have an indirect effect on multicultural acceptability by attenuating perceptions of threat of and social distance toward immigrants considerably. On the whole, thus, those with higher educational attainment tend to have higher multicultural acceptability than those with lower educational level and the difference is statistically significant. Finally, multi-group analysis by age reveals that the overall effect of educational level on multicultural acceptability is much weaker in the older group than in the younger group. These findings imply that expanding schooling itself may not necessarily lead to higher multicultural acceptability. As such, it is very important to cultivate students' civic awareness so that they can possess heightened multicultural acceptability. In addition, for relatively older people, it is important to keep offering multicultural citizenship education as part of lifelong education.
