The Great Emergence: Modernity As An Emergent Property of Homo Sapiens

오늘날 해방과 보편적 진보로서의 근대성, 서구라는 지역의 독특한 과정으로서 근대성 창조라는 신화는 도전과 비판에 직면하고 있다. 근대성에 대한 회의론은 거대이론에 대한 포스트모더니즘의 공격과 분과학문의 지나친 전문화‧세분화에 기인했다. 서구에서 발생한 근대성은 인류 최초의 근대성이라는 의미를 가지며, 바로 이 때문에 서구 근대성을 신화화하는 인식이 생겨났다. 그러나 서구 근대성은 종(種)으로 인류의 집단지성이 창출한 위대한 성과 중의 하나이다. 이 논문에서는 근대성 무용론에서 벗어나 방대한 시간을 다루는 역사연구에 유용한 근대성 개념을 새로이 제시하고자 한다. 호모 사피엔스의 역사에는 몇 번의 전환점이 존재하는데, 근대성 개념은 이러한 단절점 중의 하나로 의미를 갖는다. 근대성은 인류세와 마찬가지로 인간이 이전 시기와는 달리 환경을 지배하는 힘을 획득하게 된 시기로 구분될 수 있다. 정보의 누적에 의해 특정한 문턱을 넘어서게 되면 인류 지성의 정보처리 능력에는 비약이 일어나게 되고 이는 집단학습의 도약과 근대성의 창조로 이어진다. 대안적인 근대성의 창조 신화는 결정론과 우연성을 함께 고려하며, 인류 집단학습에 대한 연구 아젠더를 계발하고, 보편적이며 학제적인 시각을 중시함으로써 근대성의 의미를 재조명하게 될 것이다.
