초록

This research aims to explore the role of East German immigrants in West Germany as a bridges to East Germany in context of the Cold War and the national division, and to discuss the importance of their role in the realization of reunification. From here on, Immigrants refer to refugees as well as all East Germans immigrants in West Germany. The number of Immigrants during the forty years of division was near five million. And most of them still maintained their relations with East. Immigrants exchanged letters and parcels with friends and relatives in East, and either visited them or provided opportunities for them to visit West. They also pressured the government in West to keep paying attention to reunification by organizing various political or cultural activities, and made appropriateness of reunification public by emphasizing the sense of homogeneity in culture and history. In this ongoing effort, they promoted East-West interaction, alleviated the heterogeneity from division, and contributed to the continuing awareness of the importance of reunification in West. Overall, Immigrants at the time of division acted as liaison between East and West and guardians of the reunification of Germany. Although the reunification was largely due to the government policies in 1970s that advocated more interactions and improvement of relationship between East and West Germany, it would not have been possible without the constant efforts made by Immigrants.
