Abstract

Purpose: Recently, companies have faced new challenges to deal with social and environmental issues comprehensively, and have tried to adopt various eco-friendly management activities as a way to cope with environmental issues. In this situation, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the top management's support for eco-friendly management activities improves perceived environmental performance and whether the corporate innovation-oriented culture strengthens the positive relationship between them. Composition/Logic: This study consists of five chapters. Chapter 1, Introduction, explains the motivation and purpose of the study, and Chapter 2 establishes the research hypothesis of based on theoretical discussion through review of existing literature. Chapter 3 presents the sample, data, and variables measurement, and then presents the results of the empirical analysis in Chapter 4. Finally, Chapter 5 concludes the thesis by discussing the implications and limitations of this paper. Findings: Hypothesis testing was performed with 628 observations obtained through a survey of import and export manufacturers located in Korea and China in 2014. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the higher the level of top management's support for eco-friendly management activities, the better the perception of the company's environmental performance, and the positive relationship between them is strengthened under the innovation-oriented culture. Originality/Value: This study used the upper echelon theory to investigate the impact of top management, which has not been studied much, despite its importance in leading eco-friendly management activities to actual environmental performance. It also sought to expand the research horizon by discussing under what conditions the positive relationship between top management’s support for eco-friendly management activities and corporate environmental performance can be strengthened using the CVF (Competitive Value Framework) of corporate culture.
