초록
France has been a nation of immigrants since the end of 19th century. Before the World War II most of the immigrants came from European countries, but after 1945 Northern Africans Muslims became a major source of immigration to France: while the former has easily assimilated into the French society, the latter has experienced difficulties in doing so because of their religion and culture. Thus, France has elaborated “the republican integration model” to integrate Muslim immigrants. According to “the republican integration model,” the Muslims are not allowed to form their own communities and to reveal their religious symbols in public. However, the republican model turns out to be ineffective in integrating Muslims into French society. Then, new models are developing: that is, a sort of affirmative action in U.S.A., acknowledging ethnic identities and rights to be different. In this atmosphere, French government is pursuing so called 'Civic Integration' and 'Anti-discrimination policy' to solve the problem of immigration. This shows that the multiculturalism could be 'an' answer in integrating immigrants into French society, in addition to the traditional assimilation policy in France.
