초록
As Japan began to accelerate its rule on Korea with the victory in the Russo-Japanese war, the number of Japanese immigrants to Korea was increased dramatically. Consequently, the composition and influence of Japanese immigrants in Korea underwent great expansions. Among those changes, this study focused on the emergence of Japanese version of ‘Who’s Who’ covering successful and prominent Japanese in Korea. These publications reflect the emphasis on success in late Meiji Japan and, consequently, among Japanese immigrants in Korea. In particular, this study tried to analyze three publications spanning from the post Russo-Japanese war to the early years of the colonial period. As a result, this study found out that the definition and description of the so-called ‘successful’ Japanese notables in Korea changed over the time. The 1908 version put emphasis on the hardships, diligence, and ceaseless efforts as the key to success. Naturally, many people in those books were from poor families or lacked educational backgrounds. In contrast, the 1917 version included many cases of educated and well-funded Japanese who found success and social respect in Korea without much difficulties. This change indicates that success in colonial Korea was deeply intertwined with the expansion of Japan’s colonial rule. Even though the compilers of those books emphasized the personal efforts and capabilities as the keys to success in Korea, what really mattered in the composition of the upper class Japanese in Korea was the progress of colonization and the prerogatives enabled by colonial authorities.
