Abstract

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine how gender experiences and sociocultural mechanisms affect women’s subjective risk perception and behavior from a gender point of view. For this, taking the case of cancer-causing sanitary pad crisis, in-depth interviews with a reflective approach were conducted with 12 unmarried women in their 20s-30s as main consumers of sanitary pad. The results showed that the characteristics of women’s “extension of anger” and “continuity of anxiety” in the risk of cancer-causing sanitary pad were different from the emotional reactions in previous risk perception studies. Also women’s reactional behaviors were more complex and even contradictory. It was revealed that factors of male-centered capitalist society and sociocultural taboo about menstruation are interacting in this gendered mechanism. Women’s long-lasted gendered experiences and orders learned over generations have continuously influenced on women’s risk perception and behavior. This study has significance in that it has focused on subjective risk perception, especially gendered experiences of women in sociocultural context which has not been addressed as a major part of risk communication research. This suggests the need for the adoption of a gender paradigm in future risk communication research.
