Abstract

In this study, the influence of YouTube viewing of adolescents on academic achievement was tested. Additionally, the moderating effects of parental intervention, peer intervention, and parental YouTube viewing on the relationship between YouTube viewing and academic achievement were also analyzed. For this study, 300 pairs of parents and their children in grades 5th and 6th were surveyed. The results showed that watching YouTube had a negative effect on the academic performance of children in upper grades of elementary school. Peer mediation and parental viewing also had negative effects on academic performances. The moderation analyses showed that the influence of YouTube viewing on the decline in academic performance was alleviated when parents adopted restrictive mediation.
