Abstract
This study examines the impact of gender role attitudes within family settings on gender-based disparities in highbrow and sports leisure consumption. More egalitarian gender role attitudes among family members are associated with increased highbrow consumption for both men and women. Furthermore, men from families with more equitable gender role attitudes are more likely to engage in highbrow consumption and less likely to attend sports events compared to men from families with traditional gender roles. Unlike women, men embedded in wider social networks do not significantly increase their highbrow consumption. Additionally, men with higher household incomes tend to attend sports events more frequently, but not highbrow cultural events. These findings indicate that gender norms linking highbrow culture with femininity and sports with masculinity reinforce gender-based symbolic boundaries within leisure choices, rather than being solely based on class or social capital. This study underscores the potential for men to contribute to narrowing the gender gap in leisure consumption and emphasizes the role of gender equality in fostering diverse leisure preferences.
