계급과 젠더의 교차를 통해 본 여가의 의미: 초등학생 자녀를 둔 전업주부를 중심으로

The Meaning of Leisure through Class and Gender Crossings Based on Full-time Housewives with Children in Elementary School

초록

본 연구는 초등학생 자녀를 둔 전업주부를 대상으로 여가에서 드러나는 계급적 특성과 차이를 파악하되, 질적 연구 방법을 활용해 행위자의 인식체계에 접근함으로써 그러한 차이가 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 구체적으로 규명하고자 하였다. 상, 중, 하로 분류된 각 계급별로 총 36명의 여성들에 대한 심층면접을 실시한 결과, 외현적인 여가 행위의 상이함 이외에도 여가에 부여하는 목표나 의미, 구체적인 방식 등에서 계급에 따른 차이가 확인되었다. 먼저 상층은 경제적, 시간적 여유를 바탕으로 자기 계발이나 문화 자본 향유와 연계된 개인적인 여가를 누리는 유일한 집단이며, 자녀 및 가족과의 여가에서는 주로 자신이 가진 문화 자본, 특히 영어 실력이나 문화예술적 소양을 자연스럽게 자녀에게 전수할 수 있는 ‘환경 조성’을 지향하는 면모를 보인다. 반면 중층은 대개 자녀나 가족의 요구에 맞추는 공동체적인 여가관을 내면화한 가운데, 자녀와 함께 하는 시간이나 가족 단위의 여가 시간 모두를 자녀 교육이라는 목표 하에 수단화하는 경향이 뚜렷하다. 특히 자녀의 학업이나 성적에 방점을 두고 그와 직접적으로 관련된 ‘교육’이나 ‘주입’을 통해 자녀가 영어 능력이나 문화 예술적 소양 같은 문화 자본을 효과적으로 획득할 수 있도록 지원한다는 점 또한 중층에서 특징적으로 나타나는 현상이다. 경제 자본이 더욱 부족한 하층의 경우 미래의 직업활동을 위한 준비나 자녀 및 가족과 함께 하는 시간에 한해서만 부분적으로 여성의 여가가 인정된다. 이들은 타계급에 비해 전반적인 교육과정을 중시한다거나, 자녀가 영어 실력이나 문화 예술적 소양을 쌓는 것보다는 다양한 경험을 하는 그 자체를 강조하면서 ‘엄마가 직접 가르치는 것’, ‘부모가 함께 하는 활동’ 등에 더 많은 의미를 부여하는 차별성을 보인다.

Abstract

This research is to understand the class characteristics and differences focusing on full-time housewives who have children in elementary school. This research will utilize the qualitative research method to approach the performer’s cognitive system and specifically examine the meaning of these differences. The result of the in-depth interview of 36 women classified into high, middle, lower classes showed that there are differences in their objectives or meanings of leisure, specific methods, etc. according to their class. First of all, the high class was the only group that enjoys leisure through self-development or personal leisure related to cultural capital based on economic means and time to spare. Also, when spending leisure time with children and family, they pursue “creating an environment” in which they can naturally pass down their own cultural capital, especially English skills or cultural arts knowledge. On the other hand, the middle class usually internalize a communal leisure based on the needs of their children and family. They have a strong tendency to take the time they spend with their children or all of their family leisure time to make it a means, under the objective of educating their children. Especially, it is the characteristic of the middle class to support the children, so that they can effectively obtain English skills or cultural knowledge by putting emphasis on the children’s education or grades through “direct-education” or “implantation.” For the lower class, who have insufficient economic capital, only job preparation for the future or time spent with children and family were limited to being partially acknowledged as women’s leisure. Unlike the other classes, the lower class does not emphasize their children’s English skills or cultivating cultural arts knowledge, but emphasize the overall education process and the various experiences itself by giving meaning to “mom teaching first-handedly” and “activities done together with parents.”
