Abstract
The term “Varied reprises” was basically known to indicate any repetitive variations rather than it was restricted to describe recapitulation of sonata. Varied reprises was also regarded to symbolize contemporary popular keyboard music of C. P. E. Bach who was a music virtuoso in both ‘impromptu musical performance’ and ‘improvised variations.’ Moreover, varied reprises has been employed to exclusively represent titles of keyboard sonatas of C. P. E. Bach. This study attempts to scrutinize ‘sonatas for six varied reprises’ (Sechs Sonaten für Clavier mit veränderten Reprisen, H. 126, 136-140, 1760), which was composed and published to practice comtemporary popular variations. The literature has emphasized the significance and importance of varied reprises in music history in that varied reprises was assumed to pass over the music skill of C. P. E. Bach to the next generation and it did not represent only a specific period. Notwithstanding this fact, his work was simply regarded as a transitional music which existed during the period from the Baroque to the Classic or as a just temporary music form. It was not until 1980s that the complete collection of C. P. E. Bach appeared to study his work in depth. Moreover, the literature is lack of studies, except for at most an existing 4-pages brief summary describing large volume sonatas of six varied reprises (Sechs Sonaten für Clavier mit veränderten Reprisen, H. 126, 136-140, 1760). Accordingly, this study contributes to the literature in that it is the first attempt to carefully investigate a complete collection of Sechs Sonaten für Clavier mit veränderten Reprisen to understand the characteristic of diverse forms. And then, this study attempts to describe how variational technique was integrated into diverse forms of sonata movements.
