초록

본 논문은 영국 여성 작곡가 에셀 스미스(Ethel Smyth, 1858-1944)의 오페라 작품 <숲>(Der Wald, 1901), <파괴자들>(The Wreckers, 1904), <갑판장의 조수>(The Boatswain’s Mate, 1914)의 대본 분석을 중심으로 한다.

Abstract

This article analyzes the libretti of Der Wald(1901), The Wreckers(1904), and The Boatswain’s Mate(1914), the three operas written by the British woman composer Ethel Smyth(1858-1944). Through the analysis, it was found that the overall aspects of the speeches of the female characters have changed over time due to the growing spirit of resistance in Smyth’s operas. For Smyth not only composed the music, but also participated in writing the libretti of these operas, her own spirit of resistance was naturally projected onto the characters of her operas. The disobedient female characters and their way of speaking proves the fact that Smyth raised her voice as a writer to criticize the discrimination and prejudice against women, which was prevalent in the Western society during the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century.
